Cardboard incubator brings essential healthcare boost to low- and middle-income countries

Disruptive innovator Govind Rao, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology, inspired students to explore a problem that could be solved by sensors, without losing sight of factors beyond technology. They invented a low-cost infant incubator, earning the 2019 Global Health Research Award from the Academic Pediatric Association.

New tool identifies key patterns in fMRI for some mental illnesses, improving diagnosis, treatment

Research by Tülay Adali, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, in collaboration with Ph.D. students, improves analysis of brain imaging data, assisting in diagnosis of hard-to-identify mental illnesses and efficacy of treatments.

South Korean school district taps UMBC for professional development

The South Korean Iksan District Office of Education, in partnership with the Howard County Public School System, sought Jonathan Singer, associate professor and chair of the Department of Education, to lead professional development of visiting secondary science teachers from South Korea. His training utilized a curriculum designed by UMBC researchers.

Gloria Chuku named 2020-21 Lipitz Professor for her research on the Igbo people of Nigeria

The distinguished professorship supports her innovative teaching and research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Chuku, chair and professor of Africana studies, will carry out research for her new book project, “Becoming Igbo in Nigeria and the Diaspora: A History of Ethnic Identity Formation and Negotiation.”
